DESCRIPTION:May 5th is the National Day of Awareness in Canada for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women\, Girls\, and Two-Spirit People. (MMIWG2S) In May 2019\, the National Inquiry on MMIWG2S report was released and it concluded that the murder and disappearance of Indigenous Women and Girls is an ongoing genocide. \nStatistics tell us that more Native Women go missing and are murdered each year compared to women from all other groups. Native Women are two and a half times more likely to experience violent crimes\, and at least two times more likely to experience rape or sexual assault crimes compared to others. 4 out of 5 Native Women have experienced violence. Native Women face murder rates 10 times above the national average. The murder rate for Native Women is about three times more than for non-Indigenous Women. It continues today and it must stop! \nIs this not a reason to Stand Up and say No More? \nPlease stand with us as we encourage all community members to honour this day by attending a Red Dress Day Ceremony near where you live\, displaying a Red Dress in your window or front yard\, and wearing red. We want to see participation from as many people\, homes\, and businesses as possible. Post pictures to your social media using hashtags such as #MMIWG\, @MMIWG2S\, #WhyWeWearRed\, and #NoMoreStolenSisters. \nWe also invite the community to attend the Red Dress Ceremony here with us in Perth at the Indigenous Healing Circle – National Healing Forest Memorial Site at 35 Craig Street\, Perth\, Ontario. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a time of education and reflection as we remember the experiences of the Indigenous children who attended Residential Schools.\nThe ceremony will be directed by local Indigenous Elders and include Pipe Ceremony and drumming.\n\n\nMedia Release: Orange Shirt Day  \nSeptember 30th is Orange Shirt Day and it originated from the amazing courage shown by an Indigenous Woman named Phyllis Jack Webstad who\, in the spring of 2013\, dared to tell her experiences of being at Residential School. Phyllis has said\, “When you wear an Orange Shirt\, it’s like a bit of justice for us survivors in our lifetime and recognition of a system that we can never allow again.”  \nIt is hard for us even to imagine a school system designed to hurt and harm children. The residential school program designed by the Colonial and Canadian Governments forcibly took children from their homes\, denied contact with their parents\, punished them for speaking their own language\, shamed them for their culture and beliefs and treated them shamefully. The main objective was to assimilate Indigenous people into the colonial system at any cost. Yet\, this is exactly what the Truth and Reconciliation Commission confirmed was the truth.  \nBeginning in the fall of 1831 Indigenous families could expect a knock on the door. The local officials had arrived and the truck was ready to leave. The children must go.  \nWe cannot imagine that happening to us or our children.  \nIn her new book\, North of Nowhere\, Marie Wilson said this about the testimony of survivors\, “Their stories are difficult to hear. Do not flinch. Do not hide. I cannot make it softer for you. This is what I witnessed. This history belongs to all of us.”  \nUncovering these truths has rekindled a national reckoning of this traumatic history. The discovery of mass graves of Indigenous Children has vindicated what survivors and their communities have long known. Their combined voices have now been heard and finally acknowledged. Calls for accountability continue to rise across the country from people who are listening and learning about this Canadian Tragedy and our collective part in it. It is a shadow that covers the ground where the Indigenous Children lay buried in places sometimes unknown. But never forgotten by their families and communities.  \nThis year on Monday\, September 30th at 5:30 pm\, we invite you to come to the Orange Shirt Day Ceremony to remember and acknowledge the multigenerational trauma caused by the residential school system in Canada. To respect and honour the Survivors and those who did not return home. Please commit to ongoing learning about the Calls to Action\, listen to personal stories\, find the truth\, and be aware. SUMMARY:Finding our way to reconciliation by questioning settler history
DESCRIPTION:A part of reconciliation should be questioning the ideas that justified settlement and the removal of the First Nations from their lands.  These ideas continue to justify settler ownership and exploitation of 99.8 percent of Canada’s land. This talk will explore some of those ideas through the history of settlement on a tract of land adjacent to Cornwall\, Ontario\, then part of the Akwesasne community’s territory but first rented and then sold to settlers in 1847. This and other parts of what were Akwesasne lands are the subject of ongoing land claims. \nBob MacDermid is a retired York University professor and member of the Lanark County Neighbours for Truth and Reconciliation.

SUMMARY:Celebrating Summer Solstice Together
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mills All My Relations (MMAMR) is a group of community members who recognize that we all have a responsibility to help restore what was once a relationship of trust and friendship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples in our country. This year MMAMR is partnering with the Municipality of Mississippi Mills to host a Summer Solstice celebration bringing together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. \nThis celebration\, open to everyone in the community\, will include Indigenous ceremony\, music\, jingle dancing\, crafts\, Inuit games and songs by Almonte’s Rhythm and Song Community Choir. \nDo you have something to contribute? We want to hear from you! We are hoping that some musicians from our community\, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous\, might bring a song or two that celebrates summer solstice and/or mother earth. We are also looking for vendors of crafts and finger foods that are produced honouring mother earth. SUMMARY:Memorial Installation Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Mississippi Mills All My Relations (MMAMR) is participating in The Canadian Library\, a community-engaged art initiative of 8000 books to honour Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQQTIA+ people. Various small groups in the community have wrapped 120 books with Indigenous-designed fabrics and put gold-lettered names on the spines pay tribute to the lives lost and the grief suffered by their loved ones. The names on the books have been shared by elders and families who want their stories told. Some books remain nameless to honour those who may never have a chance to tell their story. \nOn June 15 at 1pm\, a memorial ceremony will be led by Elder Barb Brant\, Mohawk\, Turtle Clan. The books will come together in one bookcase to be installed at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum. Eventually\, The Canadian Library will decide where the books will be permanently displayed. \nElder Barb Brant\, Mohawk\, Turtle Clan will lead the Ceremony\, with Knowledge Keeper Dylan Jenkins. Tony Belcourt\, Métis Knowledge Keeper and Elder\, and Mayor Christa Lowry will provide welcoming addresses. We will read and honour the names of those represented on the books.
